Learning Outcomes

Math

Estimate an area by comparing to a benchmark of a square centimetre or square metre.

Express the area of a rectangle using standard units given the lengths of its sides.

What Did Students Do?

This week, students explored the concepts of perimeter and area. We reviewed what perimeter is and how to identify it in rectangles. Students visualized and examined this concept through the use of geoboards. Students then used grid paper to draw a variety of rectangles and to identify perimeter.

Students engaged in a math talk with their peers to build their understanding of area. Students viewed examples of a referent in relation to a rectangle and tried to estimate how many squares could cover the rectangle's area. 

Students created a reference about perimeter and area. They learned about the formula that can be used to easily and efficiently find perimeter and area.

What Did Students Do?

Students practiced these concepts by creating rectangles and using math notation to show how they found P (Perimeter) and A (area). See examples of their work below.

Symmetry 

-Students investigate symmetry as a geometric property

-Students use translation symmetry to create art

Art

-Arrangements of forms into shapes and patterns can tighten a design, direct attention, and hold interest in a composition

What Did Students Do?

Students used their knowledge of shapes, patterns, and translation symmetry to create a piece of art.  They designed one section of the circle using shapes and lines and then copied their pattern onto the remainder of the pieces, creating a beautiful piece of translation symmetry.  Most students have completed their work while others are in various phases of progress.

Writing

-I can create text that uses dialogue and figurative language to entertain an audience

What Did Students Do? 

Students continued working on their Journey writing this week.  They worked on two new pages of the wordless picture book, focusing on using dialogue and attention to detail. On Wednesday, students used their writing rubric to self assess their writing up to this point.  Many students were involved in writing conferences with their teachers.

Science 

Weather Watch

-I can identify some common types of clouds, and relate them to weather patterns.

What Did Students Do?

Through our study on clouds, students learned how clouds form and connected this with their previous learning about the water cycle.  Ms. Chen led them through an experiment, making clouds in a glass jar.  Students then created a visual journal page to represent their learning.  Previous to this, students explored different types of clouds and shared their learning by making each type of cloud using cotton balls and markers.

Reflection and Rotation Symmetry

-I can investigate symmetry as a geometric property

What Did Students Do? 

Students have been learning about symmetry over the past few weeks.  They have had an opportunity to explore symmetry in nature, in Indigenous art and designs, and with 2D and 3D shapes.  They have used loose parts to create their own symmetrical patterns as well as making their own design inspired by Indigenous designs.  They used Geoboards to create 2D shapes and find lines of symmetry.  For rotation symmetry they used the shape pattern blocks to find the order of rotation symmetry.  This week they pulled all of their learning together and used paper shapes to demonstrate their understanding of both reflection and rotational symmetry.

What Did Students Do?

Wow, what a wonderful experience cross country skiing was! Students learned the basics of cross country skiing and had such fun playing games, skiing down a small hill and practicing their skills. The sport allowed students to work through new and challenging ways of moving. They cheered their peers on and stopped to check in on peers who had fallen. There was a lot of laughter and some tears at some point (which is to be expected). In the end, everyone walked away having gained a memorable experience and some new skills. Hopefully your child told you about their skiing experience and perhaps they have been inspired to continue engaging in this sport.
