What Did Students Do?

This week, students participated in an in-school presentation from The Mustard Seed. Caleb came to our classroom and shared more about what this organization does and who they support. He invited the students to share more about their understanding of what it means when someone is experiencing homelessness. He talked about how kindness, compassion and empathy can make such a huge difference in how we see, think about and care about those experiencing homelessness. Students created a visual journal page about what they learned.

In math, students began interpreting algebraic expressions. Students learned that solving algebraic equations involves starting with what is known to figure out what is unknown. They applied their learning to solve algebraic puzzles. Please ask your child to tell you more about this. Here is the link to the puzzles if you'd like to do some with your child!

Science

-Identify some plants and animals found at a wetland site, both in and around the water; and describe the life cycles of these plants and animals
-Understand and appreciate that all animals and plants, not just the large ones, have an important role in a wetland community

-Draw diagrams of food chains and food webs, and interpret such diagrams

What Did Students Do?

This week, students were engaged in rich learning tasks to build their understanding of wetland ecosystems. Students learned about food chains and applied their understanding of decomposers, producers and consumers to draw and represent a food chain in their Visual Journals. They investigated wetland organisms such as the mosquito and dragonfly. They read an informational paragraph and linked seemingly random objects to the information found in the paragraph. Students presented their thinking to their classmates. We went on a walking field trip to Fish Creek Park where students did a pond dip using water from the wetland. They used magnifying glasses to look closely at the "Marsh Monsters". They drew and labeled a picture of two of these invertebrates. Students also used their five senses to observe their environment.

What Did Students Do?

I shared the book, Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed with the students on Monday.  As a large group, we then talked about what a summary was and together summarized the book, Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed.  Students were then split into groups.  They were given a book and worked together to summarize it on chart paper. Once they were ready, they shared their group summary with the class. We then read them the book, The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything. We discussed the book and how we might summarize it.  Students were then asked to do their own summary for the book.

What Did Students Do?

Students watched videos, read stories, discussed events, and looked at timelines around residential schools and Orange Shirt Day.  They connected Phyllis Webstad's work with our school wide text, The Power of One.  In large and small group discussions students talked about how Phyllis Webstad was an example of The Power of One.  They discussed what Every Child Matters meant to them, why we observe Orange Shirt Day, and how they are working towards reconciliation. Students then wrote down their ideas into short paragraphs.
