Learning Outcomes

Math

Students multiply natural numbers within 100 000, including with standard algorithms with a focus on basic facts.

Solve problems using addition and subtraction.

Solve problems using equations, limited to equations with one or two operations.

Social Studies

What are the major geographical regions, landforms and bodies of water in Canada?

How do landforms, bodies of water and natural resources affect the quality of life in Canada?

What Did Students Do?

We continued on with our multiplication work this week. Students reviewed the traditional algorithm for two by one digit and three by one digit multiplication equations. As we look ahead, students will work with three by two digit multiplication equations next week. Students also continued building their fact fluency and learned strategies for the 7x and 8x tables.

Students also worked on math problem solving this week. They applied addition, subtraction and number sense understanding to solve these problems. Students also shared their thinking and problem solving process with the class. See below for photos of their work!

In Social Studies, students began organizing their research about the Arctic region into a slideshow presentation. They are so excited to present their presentations to their classmates next week.

Ask Your Child:

- about their City Hall School field trip forms. These were sent home on Thursday

- about their Metis week French work and art

- about their Makerspace experience this week

English Language Arts

Develop creative expression through the use of organizational processes, methods, and tools.

Express ideas through multiple-paragraph works that include topic introductions, supporting evidence, and conclusions.

Arrange and express ideas logically, using interesting details and transitions between sentences or paragraphs.

How do landforms, bodies of water and natural resources affect the quality of life in Canada?

What Did Students Do?

Students continued to build their understanding of multiplication this week. They learned efficient mental math strategies for the 6x table and continued to build their fluency with the fact families from last week. Students also reviewed and practiced how to use the Grid Method to solve larger multiplication equations. We will work towards multiplying three by two digit equations in the coming weeks as well as using the traditional method as a strategy.

In writing, students worked on organizing their ideas for an opinion piece of writing. Students used an OREO graphic organizer (Opinion, Reasons, Examples, restate Opinion) to plan their ideas. They will continue to weave their ideas into organized paragraphs with linking words next week.

In Social Studies, students began learning about the Arctic natural region of Canada. Students are using resources to find information about this region such as the natural resources, climate/weather and history. Students will work towards creating a slideshow presentation of their research in the coming weeks.

Have a wonderful Fall Break!

Ask Your Child:

- to tell tell you about the Remembrance Day assembly

- about their poppy art and the process of creating it

- to show you how the grid method works

Create written texts in a variety of forms and structures.

What Did Students Do?

This week, students completed a timed multiplication fact fluency assessment for us to gather baseline data. They began learning about efficient and effective mental math strategies for specific fact families. 0x, 1x, 2x, 5x, 10x, 3x, 4x. Students practiced these fact families in a variety of ways, through games, individual practice with decks and on multiplication.com games.

Students also began learning about Remembrance Day and the symbol of the poppy. Students listened to a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts about Remembrance Day and the poppy. They represented their understanding, connections and reflections in a visual journal page. Students also began creating Remembrance Day art.

Ask Your Child:

-To tell tell you about the stories and videos we watched to learn more about Remembrance Day and the poppy

-To tell you about the natural regions of Canada. See if they can name all six natural regions!

-To tell you about the cultural games we played in Phys Ed and how they help build our stamina

-To tell you about the novel they have started during Reading Groups
