Learning Outcomes

Math

Estimate an area by comparing to a benchmark of a square centimetre or square metre.

Express the area of a rectangle using standard units given the lengths of its sides.

What Did Students Do?

This week, students explored the concepts of perimeter and area. We reviewed what perimeter is and how to identify it in rectangles. Students visualized and examined this concept through the use of geoboards. Students then used grid paper to draw a variety of rectangles and to identify perimeter.

Students engaged in a math talk with their peers to build their understanding of area. Students viewed examples of a referent in relation to a rectangle and tried to estimate how many squares could cover the rectangle's area.

Students created a reference about perimeter and area. They learned about the formula that can be used to easily and efficiently find perimeter and area.

Math

Symmetry

-Students investigate symmetry as a geometric property

-Students use translation symmetry to create art

Art

-Arrangements of forms into shapes and patterns can tighten a design, direct attention, and hold interest in a composition

What Did Students Do?

Students used their knowledge of shapes, patterns, and translation symmetry to create a piece of art.  They designed one section of the circle using shapes and lines and then copied their pattern onto the remainder of the pieces, creating a beautiful piece of translation symmetry.  Most students have completed their work while others are in various phases of progress.

ELAL

Writing

-I can create text that uses dialogue and figurative language to entertain an audience

What Did Students Do?

Students continued working on their Journey writing this week.  They worked on two new pages of the wordless picture book, focusing on using dialogue and attention to detail. On Wednesday, students used their writing rubric to self assess their writing up to this point.  Many students were involved in writing conferences with their teachers.

Upcoming Events:

February 21st – Fun Lunch

Science

Weather Watch

-I can identify some common types of clouds, and relate them to weather patterns.

What Did Students Do?

Through our study on clouds, students learned how clouds form and connected this with their previous learning about the water cycle.  Ms. Chen led them through an experiment, making clouds in a glass jar.  Students then created a visual journal page to represent their learning.  Previous to this, students explored different types of clouds and shared their learning by making each type of cloud using cotton balls and markers.

Math

Reflection and Rotation Symmetry

-I can investigate symmetry as a geometric property

What Did Students Do?

Students have been learning about symmetry over the past few weeks.  They have had an opportunity to explore symmetry in nature, in Indigenous art and designs, and with 2D and 3D shapes.  They have used loose parts to create their own symmetrical patterns as well as making their own design inspired by Indigenous designs.  They used Geoboards to create 2D shapes and find lines of symmetry.  For rotation symmetry they used the shape pattern blocks to find the order of rotation symmetry.  This week they pulled all of their learning together and used paper shapes to demonstrate their understanding of both reflection and rotational symmetry.

What Did Students Do?

Students continued working on their Journey writing this week.  They worked on new pages of the wordless picture book, focusing on using figurative language and dialogue in their writing as well as continuing with descriptive language.

Ask Your Child

-How does a cloud form?

-How do you make a cloud in a jar?

-How many lines of symmetry does a rectangle have and what is the order of rotation?

-How are you feeling about your Journey writing?

-What did you do during Maker Space time on Friday?  Were your successful in rescuing Ms. Harris' items?

Upcoming Events:

February 14th – Fun Snack

February 15-16th – Support Staff and Teacher's Convention

Learning Outcomes

Physical Education and Wellness

-Students reflect and relate life experiences to perseverance and well-being.

-Students demonstrate how collaboration influences physical activity.
-Students demonstrate and adapt various movement patterns to enhance skill development.

What Did Students Do?

Wow, what a wonderful experience cross country skiing was! Students learned the basics of cross country skiing and had such fun playing games, skiing down a small hill and practicing their skills. The sport allowed students to work through new and challenging ways of moving. They cheered their peers on and stopped to check in on peers who had fallen. There was a lot of laughter and some tears at some point (which is to be expected). In the end, everyone walked away having gained a memorable experience and some new skills. Hopefully your child told you about their skiing experience and perhaps they have been inspired to continue engaging in this sport.

-Students investigate symmetry as a geometric property.

-Recognize symmetry in nature.

-Recognize symmetry in First Nations, Métis, and Inuit designs.
-Investigate symmetry in familiar 2-D and 3-D shapes using hands-on materials or digital applications.

What Did Students Do?

Literacy

This week, we had the opportunity to work with Hal Eagletail, an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper. He came into our classroom and shared rich stories, powerful songs and information. Hal spoke about the connection that humans have to nature, the land and animals. He sang songs and played his drum. Students created a visual journal page to represent the concepts they connected deeply with. Check them out below. It was a wonderful experience and there were so many takeaways. Ask your child to tell you more about this experience.

Students began working on a written story to accompany the wordless picture book Journey. Our focus has been on generating ideas, writing from the 3rd person perspective, hooking our readers and using description to describe character or setting. We will continue this work in the coming weeks. Ask your child to tell you about the story they have started.

Math

This week, students investigated the concept of symmetry related to 2-D shapes. After learning about concepts such as symmetry, line(s) of symmetry, symmetrical/asymmetrical, they had opportunities to notice lines of symmetry in our classroom. They had an opportunity to consider examples of symmetry in nature. Students made beautiful symmetrical designs using loose parts. They drew their creations and showed the line of symmetry. Students also looked at First Nations, Inuit and Metis art and examined the use of symmetry. They began creating their own symmetrical art inspired by these designs. Check out examples of their work below. Students are noticing symmetry in their surroundings! In your adventures this weekend, see if you can find more examples of symmetry.

Learning Outcomes

Math

-Students can relate location to a position on a grid.

Wellness

-Students examine the effect of motivation on physical activity.

-Students reflect and relate life experiences to perseverance and well-being.

-Students analyze responsibility and consider the impact on well-being.

What Did Students Do?

This week, students learned about coordinates on a grid. They learned about the X and Y axis and began using coordinates to relate position on a grid. Students played Battleship as a way to practice their skills. Ask your child to tell you more about using coordinates to locate position on a grid. Ask them to tell you more about the first and second number in an ordered pair. For example, (3, 12).

A highlight from this week would be Alien-in-Line Skating. Students had a blast! Students learned fundamental skills for balance, movement, safe falling and stopping. Students were challenged to incorporate increasingly more challenging skills through balance, movement and even tricks. Ask your child to tell you about their favourite part of Alien-in-Line Skating.
